How to Pick a Safe Helmet

Listen to me read this post

Today I'm going to talk about picking a safe helmet.  You watched the videos from Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP) and you are convinced that wearing a helmet is a good idea.  Now you need to know how to find a good helmet.

But maybe you say, "Hey, Cassie, I already have a helmet.  I don't need to listen to today's post."  Don't stop listening, I have some important information for you too.  Normally, I would say, "Great!  see you later."  But after my training session with AIP I learned not all helmets are good and only high quality helmets protect you in an accident.  In fact, using a cheaply made helmet is not only useless, it can actually hurt you more.

So here are 3 things you should look for when buying a helmet, according to AIP:

1.  Inside the helmet there should be a thick inner layer of styrofoam.   This is the most important part of the helmet and the part that is usually missing from cheap helmets.    It should be thick, hard white foam.  Poke it with your finger nail.  If it's soft and leaves a dent or breaks away little pieces, it's no good.

2. The outside should have a hard shell.  This hard, outer shell protects your head from sharp things that might poke through the helmet.

3.  And third, the helmet should have a sturdy chin strap that is adjustable so that you can wear it snuggly under your chin.   You want the helmet to fit properly on your head and stay in place while you ride.

It will cost a little more for a high quality helmet but aren't you worth it.  And it's a lot cheaper than the hospital bills and long term care for a serious brain injury.  You might be surprised that good quality helmets are not as expensive as you thought so be sure to check them out.

That's all for today.  Thanks for listening.  This has been Cassie Brenn for fastfoodenglish.blogspot.com.

PS - If you live in Vietnam ProTec makes a high quality "tropical" helmet for an affordable price.  http://www.protec.com.vn/web/
